Module Description:The function of this course is to enable the student to appreciate the importance of units, be able to identify and analyse basic force systems and apply basic trigonometry to the solution of problems in surveying and mechanics.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Apply basic trigonometry
  2. Solve linear equations and transpose linear formulae
  3. Calculate the areas and volumes of regular shapes and objects
  4. Use units correctly in their calculations
  5. Analyse basic concurrent coplanar force systems

Number Types, Operations and Laws of Arithmetic, Use of Calculator, Percentages, Errors(Rounding, Absolute, Relative and Percentage Errors ), Approximations , Scientific Notation, The S.I. system of units, Definitions, units and symbols, Converting units, Other systems of units.
Formation and Evaluation of Formulas, Brackets, Simple transpositions and Solutions of equations, Linear Function, Straight line Graph
Perimeters and areas of regular plane figures and composites of regular plane figures. Surface Areas and Volumes of Regular Solids and composites of regular solids
Parallel lines, Triangles, Similarity , Measurement of angles in degrees ,minutes and seconds , Right angled triangle , Pythagoras’ Theorem , Trigonometric ratios, Inverse Trigonometric Ratios, Solution of problems in Surveying and Mechanics
Concurrent Coplanar Force Systems
Mass, force and gravity. Representation of a force as a vector. Classification of force systems. Triangle, parallelogram and polygon of forces theorems. Resultant, equilibrant and components. Bow’s Notation. Space and force diagrams. Ties and struts. Equations of equilibrium

A repeat examination
Reassessment of this module will consist of a repeat examination. It is possible that there will also be a requirement to be reassessed in a coursework element.
Reassessment Description
Students shall be offered appropriate alternative assessments in place of recoverable elements of coursework for consideration prior to the repeat examination board meeting. Elements of coursework which the programme board have agreed are non-recoverable are clearly communicated to students at the start of each semester.
