Module Description:This module aims to provide the student with the technical skills required to make a competent contribution in the design of basic structural elements and detailing of structural forms in various materials
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Identify the function and construction of civil engineering structures
  2. Choose and evaluate appropriate actions (with reference to National Annexes (EN), and partial safety factors, in accordance with Eurocode 1
  3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the effects of actions on structural elements
  4. Design Reinforced Concrete and Steel beams for flexure, Steel Struts for compresssion and simple connections in structural steelwork
  5. Prepare and interpretate structural drawings and material schedules
  6. Communicate effectively with construction professionals in technical matters relating to structural detailing, both nationally and internaltionally.
 

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Loading
Permanent Actions (permanent gravity loads) and Variable Actions including wind loads. Load takedown to determine actions on beams, columns, foundations
Reinforced Concrete Beam Design (Bending Reinforcement)
Limit state design Approach. Analysis of a singly reinforced concrete beam Design of bending reinforcement.
Design of Steel Sections
Design of laterally restrained steel beams. Design of axially loaded struts.
Connections in Structural Steelwork
Lapped tie bar. Simple Beam to Column connections.
Reinforced Concrete Detailing
Materials – concrete mixes and reinforcements. Bar bending schedules. Structural action and location of reinforcement. Requirements for reinforcement – bond and anchorage Cover, spacing, laps and joints, curtailment, maximum and minimum amounts of reinforcing. Structural elements – pad base foundations, columns, beams, slabs and retaining walls.
Structural Steelwork Detailing
Structural steel sections. Bolts and welds. Foundation connection details. Framing drawings, steel portal frames and jointing details. Beam to beam, beam to column connections, end cleats and end plates, notching and clearance. Beam and column junction details. Steel truss - ordinary bolted gusset, nested bolted gusset and welded.
