Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Make an appropriate application for work placement, e.g., by writing a CV, covering letter, email, and doing a job interview.
  2. Use a broad range of upper-intermediate (B2) level vocabulary and grammar with reasonable accuracy in their spoken and written language in academic and general contexts.
  3. Write with accuracy and a broad range of upper-intermediate (B2) language texts that are relevant to the student's needs at this stage of their course.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of key points, detail and inference in spoken and written English in a variety of topics (general and academic) at upper-intermediate (B2) level, including extended academic texts.

Preparing for Work Placement
Writing a CV. Writing a covering letter to apply for a job. Sending a job application in a formal email. Preparing for a job interview: using language to discuss one's skills, experience and qualifications. Simulating a job interview.
Listening to authentic audio material on general and academic topics, to help develop strategies and comprehension of spoken English at upper-intermediate level.
Working on pronunciation, fluency and confidence in speaking through the completion of a variety of role plays and other oral fluency tasks.
Reading intensively and extensively a range of texts on academic and general-interest topics to develop skills, strategies and comprehension at upper-intermediate level.
Writing a range of short tasks using lexis and grammar at upper-intermediate level.

Practical/Skills Evaluation Work Application Project. Students produce a 'Work Application Project' in which they write a CV, a covering letter and covering email, and prepare language (formal interview vocabulary) for a job interview. This may account for 20% of the assessment. The project ends with a role-played job interview in which the student must discuss their skills, experience and other typical interview topics.
