Module Description:This module will provide students with the requisite knowledge of how Sport in Ireland is structured, developed and delivered.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Outline the key agencies involved with the organisation of sport in Ireland.
  2. Discuss critically the structure of sport in Ireland at a national and local level.
  3. Assess how the organisation of sport in Ireland has evolved.
  4. Critically appraise a project/event that a National Governing Body use to encourage a population to participate in their Sport.
  5. Summarise key changes in participation in sport and physical activity, in Ireland.
  6. Compare and contrast rates of participation in sport and physical activity, in Ireland and abroad.

Indicative Content
Who's who in Irish Sport?
Overview of main government departments, ministers and agencies involved in Irish sports. Discussion on how Irish Sport has evolved in its organisation over time, Cospoir, etc. Dept. of Finance, Dept. of Transport, Tourism & Sport, The Irish Sports Council/Sport Ireland, Coaching Ireland, OCI, Irish Institute of Sport, Paralympics Ireland, Local Sports Partnerships, National Governing Bodies etc.
The Irish Sports Council.
Roles, Responsibilities, functions, examples of projects. (Guest Speaker)
How is local sport organised?
Evolution, structure and remit of Local Sports Partnerships. Examples of projects aimed at specific target groups such as Go for Life, Girls in action, Women in Sport etc.
How do we exercise?
Analysis of changes in participation, team sports participation, individual activities, target population examples. Comparison with European, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian populations.
How Physical Education and Sport is Organised at Primary, Secondary and 3rd Level.
Analysis of the PE curriculum and Primary and Secondary level, alongside a review of most recent data monitoring rates of participation in activities by Primary and Second level Children. Overview of Buntus and ASAP. Overview of 3rd Level sport, CUSAI etc.
Disability Sport
Guest lecture from representatives of Paralympics Ireland, Irish Wheelchair Association, or the CARA centre.
Special Olympics Ireland
Role and responsibilities, and examples of what they do. (Guest Speaker)
Funding and grant allocations.
Overview of budgetary parameters to which the ISC and NGB's work. National Lottery Funding, Sports Capital Funding. Examples of partnership building through the funding of joint projects, i.e. HSE and ISC funding the Women in Sport programme.
Lifelong Involvement in Sport and Physical Activity / Long Term Athlete Development
Individual and player development pathways in National Governing Bodies and Statutory agencies
