Module Description:Supervised practice placements form an integral component of the BA in Applied Social Care Level 8 degree course. The purpose of the module Placement 1 is to give the students a structured field work opportunity in a recognised social care setting. The students will reflect on theoretical knowledge and academic coursework and apply the learning to practice. The student will gain practical knowledge with the guidance of an experienced social care worker in order to facilitate the student to develop skills and core competencies for developing a professionalism in social care. The student will develop a critical reflective practice under the supervision of the practice supervisor in consultation and support from their academic tutor. Placements have a three way working partnership of the Institute, Social Care Agency and in the centre the student.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of social care as a profession and it's core values.
  2. Begin the development of core competencies, essential in the formation of the Social Care Practitioner.
  3. Develop key social care practice skills; communication, interpersonal, creative thinking, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, record keeping.
  4. Engage in the process of self awareness in order to establish a foundation as a reflective practitioner.
  5. Identify linkages between theory and the practice environment.
  6. Develop personal confidence and use initiative to direct their own learning.
  7. Prepare for and actively participate in formal supervision sessions and the midway meeting with the college tutor.
  8. Demonstrate a suitability for social care work.

Students need to demonstrate their commitment and motivation for social care practice
Knowledge – students are expected to demonstrate the ability to apply theory to practice. They should draw on the learning from their course of study to inform their practice over the placement duration. Attitude & Values – students are expected to work from the ethical base of social care practice which respects the practice of the agency and its service users. Core Skills – Students are expected to acquire core skills/competencies in social care practice over the course of their placement

3. REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
Students should adopt a reflective practice approach to their learning experiences over the placement duration. • Reflect on coping skills, attitudes and responses, values, actions and the impact of these on their clients • Awareness of their personal attributes and how these impact on the relationship with the client • Awareness of wider social, economic, political and cultural contexts in which social care practice operates and the impact of this on the service provided to the client • Adopt an inquisitive approach to social care practice and methodologies used within the placement setting. • Moral questions faced by social care workers in carrying out their practice
4. PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDES:
Students are expected to work in a professional manner and adhere to both DkIT's Work Placement Code of Conduct as well as the working arrangements and practices of the social work agency where they are placed.
5. SUPERVISION
Supervision is a key element of the placement experience and where the student can explore learning experiences and understand how to direct their own learning. Students are expected to use supervision as a way to guide the professional and personal development as potential professional social care practitioners. Demonstration of: • Openness to learning and new approaches to work • Effective and appropriate use of supervision time • Ability to address issues arising from supervision meeting • Ability to transfer learning - Ability to take on constructive criticism.

Special Regulation
Students must satisfactory complete the Placement Preparation workshops/sessions and submit the required documentation. Additional health and safety requirements include: Satisfactory Garda / Police Vetting, Child Protection training, Occupational First Aid and Manual Handling Training, Hep B vaccinations (Learing Outcomes: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8); The practice placement supervisor will complete an Evaluation of the students progress. This is a pass/fail recommendation. Students must obtain a pass in this in order to be considered to have completed a successful placement (Learning Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8); In the event of failing this module. The student will be subject to the DkIT Repeat Placement procedures.

Written Report The college academic supervisor will undertake one midway meeting. In preparation for this meeting the student must submit a midway progress report detailing their progress, their opportunity to apply theory to practice, challenges and strengths in experience. They are also asked to self evaluate their own competency development. Students who do not comply with the submission of all of these documents will be penalised in their final grade for this module.
