Module Description:This year-long module will facilitate the student to begin to acquire the clinical skills, knowledge and professional behaviours appropriate to their level of midwifery education under direct supervision.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Discuss the role and philosophy of midwifery and its application to practice across the spectrum of midwifery care (antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal).
  2. Participates with the midwife in advocating on behalf of the woman and respecting diversity.
  3. Practice evidence based midwifery care (under direct supervision) encompassing professional standards of clinical practice and professional conduct. Demonstrate awareness of local and national guidelines and policies in the provision of evidence based care.
  4. Participates with the midwife in providing safe, competent, kind, compassionate and respectful professional care where the woman and baby are the primary focus.
  5. Participates with the midwife in reflecting on their own practice and can begin to identify own learning needs and demonstrates a willingness to learn.
  6. Begins to work as a member of the Multidisciplinary team demonstrating an awareness of NMBI regulations including the scope of midwifery practice.
  7. Begins to understand the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of women and their babies.
  8. Demonstrates the ability to communicate appropriately (verbal, nonverbal, documentation) with the woman and the multidisciplinary team. Maintains the woman's right to privacy and confidentiality.
  9. Participates with the midwife in the provision of evidence based care related to assessment of maternal and fetal wellbeing, infant feeding, infection prevention and control and safe management of drug administration.

Performance Evaluation The student will normally undertake 10 weeks of supernumery clinical placement during stage 1 of the programme. The placement is assessed by clinical preceptors using a National Competency Assessment Tool and is assessed on a pass/fail basis. 100% attendance is required in clinical placement. The student must maintain a record of their clinical experiences (every week) as outlined by EU Directive 2005/36/EC and NMBI (2016). Reassessment Requirement
The assessment of this module is inextricably linked to the delivery. Therefore reassessment on this module will require the student to reattend (i.e. retake) the module in its entirety.
Reassessment Description
The student will be required to repeat the failed placement. The Progression Policy states that students who fail three clinical placements, either consecutively or over the duration of their programme, will not be offered another opportunity to repeat the clinical placement module and will be required to leave the programme.
