Module Description:This module introduces the student to the concepts of health, health promotion and physical activity. It examines the contribution of psychosocial factors on health, well being and physical activity.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Discuss the concepts, principles of and approaches to health and health promotion.
  2. Examine health and physical activity from a sociological and cultural perspective.
  3. Explain the role of psychological factors in health, physical activity and well-being.

Indicative Content
Concepts of health,
Defining Health. Relationships between health, disease and illness. Health as a Concept. Lay/ professional/medical/national and international perspective of health. Cultural influences on health.
Concepts, principles of and approaches to health promotion.
History, Development and Principles of Health Promotion. Definitions of health education, health promotion, public health and physical activity. The World Health Organisation.Principles of Health Promotion and the Ottawa Charter. Models and approaches to Health Promotion.
Sociological aspects of health and physical activity.
Introduction to Sociology. Culture and socialisation, social stratification and social class . Inequality, marginalisation, poverty. Sociological analysis of health and physical activity.
Psychological determinants of health and physical activity
Introduction to Psychology; cognition and information processing; social cognition and health; health behaviors; well being and mental health. Understanding the psychology of physical activity.
