Module Description:The aim of this module is to develop the student's ability to appraise research in the field of Health and Physical Activity. The need for, and challenges to the utilisation of disciplinary specific research in work settings is examined. This module builds on previous modules to advance students knowledge and skills of academic reading and writing.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Utilise a systematic approach when examining published research.
  2. Appraise research studies with particular reference to their strengths, limitations and implications for practice.
  3. Evaluate specific designs and methods relevant to the field of Health and Physical Activity.
  4. Discuss the facilitators and barriers to the utilisation of research in work settings.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Critiquing Research
Students will be provided with suitable frameworks to enable them to determine the strengths and limitations of key elements of research articles. The following areas will be evaluated. Introduction: the title, abstract, introduction and statement of the problem,literature review, conceptual/theoretical framework, research questions/hypotheses. Method: research design, population and sample,data collection and measurement procedures, internal and external validity, rigor. Reults and Discussion; data analysis, findings, interpretation of findings and implications for practice, overall credibility of the study including the ethical dimensions.
Evidence Based Practice
Challenges in relation to the use of evidence based practice in health and physical activity settings. Facilitators and barriers to evidence based practice.
