Module Description:This module will facilitate learners to gain knowledge, understanding and practical skills for safe practice in perioperative care and infection prevention and control.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Discuss safe practice in relation to perioperative patient/client care.
  2. Identify the risks associated with healthcare associated infections and discuss the recommended management of these risks.
  3. Discuss the assessment and management of acute pain.
  4. Identify, explain and demonstrate safe skills in aseptic non-touch technique.
  5. Explain and demonstrate safe intramuscular and sub-cutaneous injection technique.
 

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Perioperative care
Types of surgeries - Pre-operative assessment and care, Intra-operative and recovery room care Post-operative care -includes wound healing, intravenous therapy and vascular access devices.
Introduction to acute pain management
Definition of acute pain, physiology of acute pain, assessment and management of acute pain. Pain assessment tools. WHO pain ladder and medications recommended.
Infection prevention and control
Healthcare associated infections -(HCAI's) Recommended guidelines for the prevention and management of various HCAI's ( MRSA, C'Diff, Norovirus, ESBL's) -
Simulated skills learning
Demonstrate and practice of Aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT). Identify circumstances when ANTT must be used.
Simulated skills learning
Demonstrate sub-cutaneous injection technique and intramuscular injection technique. Identify and locate recommended sites for subcutaneous and intrmuscular injection.
