Module Description:The aim of this module is to introduce the student to quantitative and qualitative research, examine core concepts in research and develop the student’s knowledge and skills in relation to the process of research.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Compare research paradigms and identify key similarities and differences in paradigms.
  2. Discuss the value of qualitative and quantitative research in Nursing and Midwifery practice.
  3. Describe the role of the researcher in qualitative and quantitative research.
  4. Discuss the stages involved in the research process and identify key concepts in the process.
 

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Research Paradigms
Philosophical Assumptions of quantitative and qualitative research. Key similarities and differences.
Concepts in research:
Subjectivity versus objectivity, inductive and deductive reasoning, linear versus emergent designs, observation, description, measurement, generalisation, transferabibility, hypotheses, variables (independent/dependent), theories, control, validity and reliability, rigor.
Specific Steps in the Research Process
Choosing appropriate Nursing and Midwifery topics. Reviewing relevant literature. Formulating a research question or hypothesis. Selecting an appropriate research approach/design. The ethical issues to be considered when planning and conducting a research study. Sample selection strategies and specifying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Selecting a suitable qualitative or quantitative data collection tool. Collecting and making sense of qualitative and quantitative data. Writing the report and disseminating results.
