Module Description:This module aims to prepare the student for specialist placements by providing an overview of specialist nursing and maternity care.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Discuss the management of a person with an Intellectual Disability in the acute setting
  2. Discuss the principles and concepts relating to the provision of healthcare to children and families.
  3. Discuss the care of a family experiencing the birth of a baby.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Intellectual Disability
Introduction to intellectual disability; Causes and classification of Intellectual Disabilty; Barriers to communication and strategies; Inequalities in health; General health services experiences and people with intellectual disability. Diagnostic overshadowing. Role of the Intellectual Disability Liaison Nurse.
Children's Nursing
Discuss the physical, intellectual, language and emotional differences between children and adults. Stages of development. Age-appropriate communication and education of the child. Vital signs from birth to 12 yrs. and Paediatric Early warning Score PEWS. Recognising signs and symptoms of ill-health in children; Common Childhood conditions; Discuss the concept of family-centered care and its application to practice. Child protection Guidelines -Children first guidelines.
Materntiy Care
Discuss the care of mother and baby in the preconception, antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal period. Preconception care; health promotion; Signs and symptoms of pregnancy. Overview of antenatal care. Booking interview. Common disorders of pregnancy. Overview of intrapartum care; care in labour (video); pain control in labour; caesarian section. Postnatal care; care in the puerperium; breastfeeding; care of the baby at birth.
