Module Description:The module provides practical work experience for the learner on a farm or in a factory in the Agri-food area
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Demonstrate competence in the skills and work practices required for safe farm or food processing.
  2. Demonstrate the skills of analysis, problem solving, critical thinking, and appropriate practice on a farm or in a food factory.
  3. Work in a structured environment and act as an effective team member or team leader.

Module Content & Assessment

Placement Requirements
The placement period will be preferably be 12 weeks duration, but must be a minimum of 8 weeks. It may be undertaken with a registered Host Farmer or in a suitable agri-business. All placements must be approved by Teagasc and DkIT. Students will be required to complete the following: 1. A Workbook/ Diary similar to those already developed by the Teagasc curriculum Development Unit. This diary includes Reflective Summaries that must be completed during the placement period 2. Students in industry also need a report of their work and a supervisors report. A final interview following completion of the period of internship is required. This will evaluate the student’s role, responsibilities and contribution to the business as well as the personal experiences gained and the student’s assessment of the overall performance of the business. The student must comply with all requirements in order to gain a pass in the module.
Learning and Teaching Methods
In January of the academic year students will commence discussion of their placement requirements with the Work Placement Co Ordinator in DkIT or Ballyhaise College who will assist in the choice of a suitable location. Where the student elects to undertake placement on a farm, they must complete the placement with a Host Farmer. This term is used to define a farmer who is registered with Teagasc having undergone a selection process which includes a Safety Audit of the farm facilities.
Induction Training
During the term students will participate in an Induction Course. This course will incorporate input from the placement supervisors at DkIT and Ballyhaise. It will include details on CV preparation, interview skills, placement provider expectations, supervisor visits and assessment criteria. In the six week period before the commencement of placement students will have an interview with the placement provider. This interview process is mutual and both parties have the option to look for an alternative at this stage. This ensures that students receive a suitable placement.that students receive a suitable placement.
Support for the Student
The primary support will be provided by the work experience provider who may be a Host Farmer (or work under the supervision of a Host Farmer) or may be an industrial supervisor. During the placement period students will receive a minimum of one visit from a work placement supervisor from either DkIT or Ballyhaise.
Support for Work Experience Supervisor
In addition to the supervisory visit mentioned above, Host Farmers are required to participate in a programme of training designed to assist them in their role as trainers/educators. This commences with a selection process which includes a Safety audit of the farm. They are also required to attend routine training courses. Each year a Training Conference for Host Farmers is organised by the Teagasc Training Directorate. This deals with topics similar to those listed above and provides an opportunity to employ highly skilled specialists to deal with the subject matter.
