Module Description:The aim of this module is to introduce the student to aspects of care for persons with an intellectual disability.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Explore social aspects of care for persons with an intellectual disability.
  2. Explore historical perspectives and services relating to people for persons with an intellectual disability.
  3. Explore the classification of intellectual disability.
  4. Examine the concept of programme planning.
  5. Explore the concept of non-accidental injury

Institutionalisation. Normalisation/Social Role Valorisation. Residential care. Community living.
Introduction to concepts
Epilepsy. Challenging behaviour. Social skills. The concept of health. Stigma and Labelling.
Programme planning
Historical perspectives. Evolution of services. National Intellectual Disability Database. Eugenics.
Classification and degrees of intellectual disability.
Safe practice
Non-accidental injury.Care of the vulnerable service user
