Module Description:This stage one year long module will facilitate the student under supervision to acquire foundational clinical skills, knowledge and attitudes of a nurse in intellectual disabilities at the level of dependent participant.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Practice nursing care (under supervision) encompassing professional standards of clinical practice and professional conduct.
  2. Begin to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to organise, prioritise and co-ordinate individualised nursing care appropriate to stage one dependent participant of the programme.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to communicate appropriately with service users, families, preceptors and other members of the multi-disciplinary team using verbal and nonverbal communication including documentation skills.
  4. Provide a rationale for clinical practice including evidence based practice and individualised care delivery.
  5. Through reflection, demonstrate a cognisance of their own ability and limitations, working under supervision of preceptors to continuously improve their clinical practice.

Performance Evaluation The student will normally undertake 10 weeks of supernumerary clinical placement during stage one of the programme. The placement is assessed by clinical preceptors using the clinical assessment document and is based on a pass/fail basis.
