Module Description:The focus of this module is to explore the pathophysiological basis and management of relevant diseases/ disorders commonly experienced by persons with an intellectual disability.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Analyse the aetiology and pathophysiological features of relevant diseases and disorders (cardiovascular, respiratory, reproductive, endocrine, digestive, urinary, lymphatic & musculo-skeletal).
  2. Appraise the collaborative and nursing management of service users with a physical illness.
  3. Analyse the appropriate pharmacological response to relevant conditions.
  4. Reflect on the lived experience of relevant conditions from the perspective of a person with an intellectual disability.
 

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Utilise a human systems approach to explore common disorders.
All relevant conditions to be addressed under the headings of incidence / aetiology, underlying pathology / pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, medical, pharmacological and nursing management, complications / prognosis except the nervous system which is addressed in a separate module. Explore the lived experience of relevant conditions from the perspective of persons with an intellectual disability.
