Module Description:The focus of this module is to facilitate the students’ exploration of homeostatic balance and imbalance of the nervous system and approaches to social, medical and biochemical management.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Appraise the gross anatomy and physiology of the nervous system.
  2. Critique the pathophysiology of neurological disorders commonly present in persons with an intellectual disability.
  3. Appraise the management of neurological disorders commonly present in persons with an intellectual disability.
  4. Classify the pharmacological management of neurological disorders.

Indicative Content
Applied physiology of nervous system
Structure, control and feedback, neurotransmitters
Exploration of relevant diseases and disorders of nervous system
Aetiology and epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, nursing and medical management including pharmacological interventions. Conditions include - but not restricted to - epilepsy, acquired brain injury, dementia, neural tube defects, pain, sleep disorders.
