Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Describe the key youth work providers in Ireland, their role, funding strands, management structures. Analysis of services provided and the core values and principles that underpin their work with communities and young people.
  2. Recognise child protection best practice in the youth work sector, including a good working knowledge of requirements and documentation.
  3. Explain how principles and values influence can shape youth work, whilst identifying own personal value system and how this could impact on work with young people.
  4. Identify and analyse core competancies of youth work and how strategy is developed for gaining practical elements of these during the work placment module.
  5. Describe own personal learning goals under the headings of Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes.
  6. Demonstrate key skills needed to engage with young people in preparation for Placement Module.

Indicative Content
Placement Preparation.
Audit of skills, abilities and competancies. Identifying personal learning goals and strategies. Reviewing options available for placement most suited to individual needs. Exploration of hopes and fears.
Child Protection.
National Legislation - Children First 2011 Principles and Guidelines Carrying out risk assessment on a programme, premises and activity. Exploration of case studies and scenario based work.
Youth Work Delivery
Exploration of youth work delivery methods, to include streetwork, outreach, one to one and group work.
