Module Description:The module gives the learner the ability to carry out a health and safety audit and risk assessment of a farm and draw up a Safety Statement and a Safe System Work Plan
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Operate safely, identify hazards and eliminate risk in the working environment.
  2. Apply relevant safety, health and welfare legislation to the working environment
  3. Complete a Risk Assessment and develop a Safe System Work Plan on a farm
  4. Apply pesticide safely (simulated), with due regard to personal, crop, and environmental requirements
  5. Assess injuries, give effective first-aid, and care and comfort to the casualty.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Legislation relating to Health and Safety in the work place: Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (2005); General Applications Regulations (2007); Chemical Agents Regulations (2001). Hazards, Risks, Control measures, Risk assessment, Safety Statement. Accidents and incidents at work and reporting procedures. Legal requirements for employers and employees in the workplace and on farms, insurance and litigation.
Knowledge and skill
Farm Safety Code of Practice. Workplace training and personal protective equipment (PPE). Safety requirements for pesticide and herbicide application. First aid and casualty care. Children and older farmer safety assessment. Farm machinery risk assessment. Manual handling practical skills and techniques. Safe lifting and carrying, team lifts, use of assistive lifting equipment.
