Module Description:This module explores the global forces that influence Irish agricultural policy. It also enables students to develop their skills in the area of farm accounting and introduces basic management theory.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Explain how agricultural policy is formed in Ireland with particular emphasis on the influence of the Common Agricultural Policy and World Trade Organisation.
  2. Identify current global forces and trends affecting the Irish agricultural and food industries.
  3. Discuss the basic principles of management.
  4. Keep books of first entry, record receipts and payments, record cash and bank details and prepare a bank reconciliation statement.
  5. Complete a full manual set of accounts from farm case study data.
  6. Distinguish the types and sources of credit and explain a systematic approach to using it in a farm business.

European Union
Evolution of the European Union; The institutions of the EU.
Agricultural Policy
Irish agriculture in a European context, Common Agricultural Policy; World Trade Organisation and its influence on agriculture; Consumer trends; Sustainable Agriculture.
Introduction to Management Theory
Can running a farm be compared to running a small business? What does it take to run a small business? Do people who start and run businesses have unique characteristics? What role does management play in business success? The five functions of management; Scanning the business environment.
Farm Accounting
Selecting cost centres on the farm; Recording receipts and payments; Cash and accruals; Bank reconciliation statements Preparing cash flow, profit & loss account and balance sheet.
Controlling the Farm Business
Controlling the farm business; Agricultural credit.
