Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Use a broad range of C1-level vocabulary and grammar with considerable accuracy in their spoken and written language in academic and general contexts.
  2. Complete a variety of writing tasks with considerable accuracy using a broad range of C1-level grammar and vocabulary.
  3. Comprehend a broad range of C1-level language in spoken and written English, in academic and general texts.
  4. Speak fluently, accurately and with clear pronunciation using C1-level English on certain topics in general and academic conversation.
  5. Host an academic seminar, where he/she interacts with other students to share ideas, knowledge, understanding and express views.
  6. Use self-access material to fill noticed gaps in their developing interlanguage.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Reading authentic texts at C1 level to develop comprehension, reading skills and reading strategies. Academic and non-academic texts of various genres, topics and length. Intensive reading at C1 level for gist, detail and inference.
Academic writing, e.g., applying for further study; writing a personal statement; completing academic application forms. Non-academic writing, e.g., formal letters and emails at C1 level. Advanced error correction marks.
Listening to academic seminars on a range of topics.
Seminar skills: hosting a seminar; involving the audience; encouraging discussion; giving feedback; handling questions; working with visual aids and handouts. Pronunciation in context.
Advanced nouns (Agreement between subject and verb, noun compounds). Articles, determiners, and qualifiers.
Seminar language. Key phrases for hosting a seminar; involving an audience; encouraging discussion; collecting and giving feedback; handling difficult questions. Academic vocabulary: Opinions and ideas; presenting an argument.
