Module Description:The aims of this module are to enable students to make the transition from second to third level education by becoming better communicators both in speech and in writing. They will learn written academic skills in order to carry out focused research and will also learn how to present in oral form. This will be aligned with IT skills in order that they may engage with online and digital communication technologies both on a creative and practical level.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Communicate effectively in speech and writing.
  2. Use efficient and resourceful online techniques for gathering and analysing information.
  3. Display an understanding of the principles of academic writing.
  4. Engage with online media
  5. Demonstrate the practical skills and knowledge required to use core ICT applications and data management effectively for academic work

The Communication process: Perception, non-verbal communication
The Four Language Arts: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing
The use of blogs and other forms of social media as a medium for discourse and engagement
The necessary skills associated with searching for information online
Referencing sources: Styles, footnotes, endnotes
Creating a bibliography, filmography and webography
Academic writing style and formats: essays and online journals
Presenting information: written and oral presentations
Core ICT Applications
Students will acquire a working knowledge of data management and applications including Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation Software, Data storage, backups and processing.
