Module Description:The primary aim of this module is to give the student an opportunity to apply a procedural framework to a Music Production Project at an introductory level. It is designed to develop the student’s critical listening, application and integration of audio technologies, recording techniques and musicality. It also aims to develop organizational skills through project management and documentation. The complexity of the project proper will be commensurate with the student’s capabilities at this stage in the programme, yet sufficiently testing so as to advance the individual’s core knowledge and skills level.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Specify the basic musical framework for a small-scale production to include key, tempo, structural arrangement and instrumentation.
  2. Implement a strategy that develops the production's sonic textural and performance dynamics throughout its duration.
  3. Organise, execute and manage a series of developmental phases to include pre-production rehearsals, recording studio sessions and the preparation of a draft mix for a small-scale production.
  4. Make considered selections, based on analysis and subsequent evaluation, of production sounds and musical performances within the context of a given project.
  5. Influence, compile and integrate a series of musical handover links between the various sections of the arrangement.
  6. Creatively integrate the main musical theme into both the song's intro and outro.

Indicative Content
Writing your Project Proposal
Understanding the Project's criteria, scope and limitations. Considerations regarding choice of musical material and musicians.
A review of Recording Studio infra structure
Operational Codes, Physical and Electrical Interconnections, Standard in-house equipment, Equipment Loan Requests
Pre-Production
Musical: Key, Tempo, Groove, Song Structure, Basic Arrangement and Instrumentation. Engineering: Recording the 'Demo', Recording Priorities, Working to a Click Track. Preparation: Rehearsals, Performance Spaces, Instrument Health Checks.
Analysing the 'Demo'
Production Basics: Tempo, Grid, Notation, Click Track. Production Development: Intro, Outro and Section links.
Organising, Executing and Managing Production Development
Preparing to record in the Studio, Communicating with the Production Team, Feed Forward strategies, working effectively with an engineering assistant, Controlling the 'in-session' work-flow, ‘End of Session’ mixes.

The layering, movement and relevence of Sonic Textures and Musical Performances
Analyzing for Evaluation
A Framework for analysing Musical Performances and Sounds, Performance Attributes, Sound Objects and Sound Events, Production Sound
Edits: Working with the Grid
Drum Edits: Building a firm beat foundation for subsequent overdubbs. Bass Guitar Edits: tightening up the Bass performance to the 'edited' drum tracks

'Off-line' reviewing of previously recorded materials, what to pay attention to, writing contextualised Production Statements in advance of follow-up recording sessions based on both Production Vision and Reflection.
Essential Listening
Referenced examples of previously recorded works to highlight particularly relevent production attributes.
