Module Description:This module is designed to introduce students to the workings of the Irish and international legal systems in so far as they relate to the audio-visual industry, to provide students with an understanding of the legal principles relevant to the industry and to give students a comprehensive sense of the practical application of those principles.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of legal terminology, systems and methods.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of both Irish and international legal issues affecting media production and distribution.
  3. Display an ability to understand and distinguish issues of intellectual property in relation to audio-visual products.
  4. Illustrate an understanding of issues of contract in relation to audio-visual production.
  5. Demonstrate an ability to identify these issues early in development or production process and problem-solve accordingly.

The Irish legal system
Sources of law- Common Law and Civil Law jurisdictions
Contract law a): the essential elements of contract and formation of legal contracts
Contract law b); Legal issues in pre-production: Commissioning contracts; Co-production contracts; performer and contributor contracts; release forms; location agreements.
Intellectual Property law
Option agreements, screenplay Agreements, licences and assignments.
Technology transfer
Legal regulation of the internet.
Statutory regulation of Broadcast Media in Ireland
International co-production treaties
