Module Description:The aims of this module are: (1) introduce students to studio recording, particularly for film foley work; (2) introduce the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), particularly for sound editing and sequencing, and (3) make students aware of the various elements of a film soundtrack (e.g. ambience) and demonstrate what these elements can contribute creatively to a film.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Understand the basic physics of sound, how microphones operate and pick-up sound, and the technicalities of digital recording.
  2. Plan and execute the recording of a variety of acoustic sounds using appropriate microphone types and placement techniques.
  3. Utilise a DAW to edit sound into samples, layer them together and sequence over time.
  4. Create a basic film soundtrack that is in-sync with the events seen on screen.
  5. Understand the various elements of a film soundtrack and understand what they can contribute creatively to a film.
