Module Description:This module aims to develop the student's understanding of the Producer's role in the music creation and release process and in the music industry more generally.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between artists, labels and all relevant stakeholders and how this relationship is affected by current and emerging technologies.
  2. Demonstrate flexibility in approach and application of best practitioner’s means.
  3. Work as part of a team to competently plan and manage a Music Production project from inception to market.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to comprehend and apply the points scale.
  5. Identify, explain and critically analyze the types of agreements conventionally entered into between producers and artists / producers and labels in a variety of industry contexts.

History of, mistakes made, current challenges, current and future trends. Local and international case studies.
The Music Business Processes
Theory of running and establishing a successful music business.
Technical aspects and responsibilities of the Producer
Industry perspectives: structure, composition and interaction of various elements in the music business.
Negotiation Skills and Techniques.
A more generalized approach to entrepreneurial skills. The Points system in detail.
Promotion
Marketing/publicity/promotion/artist development.
Understanding money flow
Music sales, publishing, live performances, licensing and merchandising.
Impact of new technologies on the music industry
Historical overview of the way in which technological developments have impacted on music industry.
