Module Description:The aim of this module is to introduce the hardware and software elements involved in PLC based automation utilising digital I/O. The student will be introduced to the terminology and techniques associated with programming and hardware.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Describe the various types of PLC's available, in terms of hardware and programming languages
  2. Explain the principle of operation of digital PLC control system elements
  3. Select appropriate digital control system elements based on design criteria to include sensors and actuators
  4. Design and test PLC controlled automation systems.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of safety measures to be implemented when using PLC based automation systems.
  6. Carry out fault diagnosis on PLC based automation systems.

PLC Types, hardware and programming languages
PlC types, Internal Architecture, I/O module types, programming languages.
Operation and interfacing of control system elements.
Input devices: Electromechanical and Solid State - PNP/ NPN Sensors, Inductive/ Capacitive Proximity Sensors, Photo-sensors. Actuators: Motors, Pneumatics, Hydraulics
Design and test PLC programs
Logic Functions, Timers, Counters, Arithmetic operations, Shift Registers, Comparison, Real Time Clock Applications. Program documentation

Hardware and software safety measures
