Module Description:The aim of this module is to introduce the hardware and software elements involved in PLC based automation utilising both digital and analog I/O and SCADA/ HMI.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Explain the principle of operation of analog PLC control system elements
  2. Select appropriate analog control system components based on design criteria.
  3. Design and test PLC controlled systems utilising digital and analog I/O
  4. Explain the integration of PLC/ SCADA systems
  5. Configure and interface PLC/ SCADA systems
  6. Carry out fault diagnosis on PLC based automation systems.

Indicative Content
Operation of analog control system elements
Analog Sensors: Temperature/ Pressure/ Flow/ Level. Analog Outputs: Modulating valves, Variable Speed Drives.
Interfacing of Analog I/O
Current/ Voltage Loops (e.g. 4-20mA, 0 - 10V). 2 Wire/ 4 wire sensors
Calibration
Calibration of analog input sensor circuits
Open and Closed Loop Control
Implementation of open and closed loop control systems. Tuning closed loop systems.
HMI/ SCADA
PLC HMI/ SCADA interfacing. Technologies and configurations.
