Module Description:This module introduces students to the Building Control Regulations and develops their understanding of the purpose, scope and implications of the regulations for works
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. List and explain the principal relevant legislation, regulations, codes and standards relating to the construction of a building or structure.
  2. Identify and explain the roles and responsibilities of all parties in the design and construction of a building or structure under the Building Control Act and Building Regulations.
  3. Recognise work at the design and construction stage of a project where the Building Control Act and Building Regulations apply.
  4. Discuss the implications of the Building Control Act and Building Regulations and other relevant codes & standards for the design and construction of a building or structure.
  5. Apply the Building Regulations to the design and construction of a building or structure.

Introduction to the concept and purpose of standards and regulations of works. The importance of standardisation and regualtion
Building Control Acts
Overview and historical framework, the legislation, application of the regulations, enforcement
Specification and certification
The purpose of specification, compliance and checking. Who certifies and why. To include and overview of trade / project certification - RECI, Engineer / Architect, H&S etc
Building control regulations and guidance documents
Introduction to the specific elements and format of the Building Regulations, Technical Guidance Documents, Technical Requirements
