Module Description:This module aims to train the student in the use of standard information technology software applications that are relevant to the building surveying profession.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Employ a selection of proprietary, open source and cloud based software tools in an integrated manner to process and present information.
  2. Use the components of an Operating System to perform and organise tasks; send and receive emails with file attachments and employ a Web Browser for research purposes.
  3. Create high quality documents, including professional letters, memos, leaflets and small brochures as well as multi-page documents such as reports, to a standard compatible with business requirements.
  4. Design spreadsheets to analyse numerical data using calculations, formula, functions and charts.
  5. Create an interactive electronic slideshow that incorporates such features as pictures, tables and animation that may be used to support a professional presentation.
  6. Complete projects that integrate word processing, spreadsheet and graphics presentation software.

Indicative Content
Network Environment
Storage Media; organisation of Local Area Network; folder structures and organising data; file naming conventions; copying and moving files; shared folders and remote storage; security and access rights.
Cloud Computing Applications
Working with Windows Live and Office Web Apps; exploring how to work online using Cloud Computing; uploading and sharing files; creating folders and organising files online; adding people to your network and sharing files.
Word Processing
Editing, formatting, proofing and printing building surveying documents to include merging word documents; creating multi-page documents to include table of contents; indexes, footnotes and endnotes; citations; managing sources and creating a bibliography; working with themes and building blocks.
Graphics Presentation
Plan; create and format a presentation; insert objects to include pictures; tables and charts; create, modify and work with advanced tools and masters; Use slide show commands; transitions and animations to facilitate the smooth delivery of a professional business presentation.
Spreadsheets
Understanding spreadsheet software; working with formulas and functions; formatting worksheets; analysing data using formulas; working with charts; managing data using tables.
Integrating Data between Applications
Creating sophisticated documents incorporating data from multiple office programmes; links between the programmes to update tasks automatically.
