Module Description:This module aims to provide students with a general basic appreciation and understanding of the various types of low rise and medium rise building structures. Structures is a separate significant field of study in its own right and it is important to bear in mind that students completing this module are not expected to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of structures
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Identify and explain the principal types of building structure
  2. List and explain the principal types of loads acting on building structures
  3. Define and describe the analysis of beams and columns
  4. Appraise the structural use of steelwork, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber for building structures
  5. Identify and explain the principal factors in the design and failure of foundations

Loading
Loads (permanent and variable actions); wind and snow loading; loading data
Structural mechanics
Analysis of beams and columns; bending and shear stresses in beams; deflection
Materials and design
Consideration of: structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber
Structure of buildings
Low rise masonry buildings; single storey portal frames; stanchion and truss frames; multi-storey construction; floor and roof construction; robustness and disproportionate collapse
Foundations and cracks in buildings
Soil types; Ground resistance (bearing capacity); Strip, pad, raft and piled foundations; Foundation related cracking in buildings
