Module Description:This module will facilitate learners to gain knowledge, understanding and skills for safe practice in healthcare settings.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Identify and explain how infection is prevented and controlled in healthcare settings.
  2. Demonstrate safe practice in skills mandatory for employment in healthcare settings.
  3. Explain the principles for the safe administration of medication.
  4. Identify patients at risk of pressure ulcers and explain how the principles recommended to avoid and minimise risks are applied to patient care.
 

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Introduction to infection prevention and control
Standard precautions and Transmission based precautions recommended for prevention and control of infection. Demonstrate effective hand hygiene techniques.
Principles of safe moving and handling of people.
Leglislation -(Health Safety and Welfare at work) relating to moving and handling, the anatomy and physiology of the back, biomechanics, ergonomics and back care. Demonstrate and practice safe moving and handling of inanimate objects and people.
Principles of safe administration of medication.
Guidelines for safe adminstration of various types of medication. An Bord Altranais e-learning resource units 1 and 2 on medication management.
Measurement of temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure.
Overview of the basic anatomy and physiology of temperature control, respiration, pulse and blood pressure. demonstration and practice in measurement of temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. documentation of measurements.
Principles of prevention of pressure ulcers.
Risk factors for the development of pressure ulcers :Identifying patients at risk of pressure ulcers. Risk assessment tools. principles of prevention of pressure ulcers, pressure relieving equipment. Tissue viability, classification of pressure ulcers, management of pressure ulcers.
Basic Life Support for healthcare providers.
