Module Description:This module provides students with a practical approach to configuring system services such as Directory Services, File Services and the underlying networking hardware.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of server configuration requirements
  2. Demonstrate a knowledge of typical services running on a server.
  3. Perform basic configuration tasks on a server
  4. Understand basic electrical principles
  5. Understand structured cabling requirements
  6. Terminate and test fiber and copper cabling
  7. Understand networking from a practical perspective

Introduction to System Administration
Introduction to the main principles of system administration (desktops, servers, services, security, disaster recovery)
Server Software
Installation, configuration and management of server software
Client/Server Connectivity
Creating a network to test connectivity between client and server. Troubleshooting problems.
Structured cabling
-Data cabling requirements. -Terminating and testing copper and fibre cables
Basic electricity
-Ohm's law -AC and DC -Magnetism
Layer two protocols
Ethernet
Networking
-Configuring switches -Configuring wireless Access Points
