Module Description:The module gives students a detailed knowledge of the workings of the CPU and memory systems of a modern computer.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Understand the way a digital computer carries out instructions
  2. Understand memory systems
  3. Demostate data transfer within the computer
  4. Have knowledge of simple digital electronics
  5. Have knowledge of assembler language

Introduction
History of computing, terminology
Introduction to digital electronics
Gates, truth tables, simple circuit design, example circuits (adders, flip-flops etc.)
Memories
Types (SRAM, DRAM, ROM & Flash), main, catche, addressing, storage, two's compliment numbers
CPU
Types, fetch-execute cycle, adders, instruction types, registers
Data transfer
System bus, interfaces, interrupts
Storage
History, hard drives, removable storage (flash, optical, magnetic)
Low level programming
Assembler, C
