Module Description:This module provides students with the ability to solve technical problems in a formalised and methodical way, from reporting, through diagnosis and solution implementation, to documentation. Examples will be taken from hardware, software and other practical technical problems.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Apply Problem Solving Methodologies to technical problems.
  2. Diagnose the root cause of a given technical problem from reported symptoms.
  3. Implement a solution to a given technical problem with a known root-cause.
  4. Document the problem solving process to aid future work.

Indicative Content
Formalised problem solving
Limitations to ad-hoc problem solving, Problem Solving Methodologies (such as Ford Global 8D and similar).
Problem definition
Defining and containing the problem; execution of immediate preventative actions to prevent further undesired effects; preserving system state for further analysis.
Analysis and diagnosis
Process mapping, defining scope of analysis, containment, data gathering, analyzing for root cause.
Problem-solving process
defining and containing the problem, analyzing the problem and its root causes, selecting and developing the most effective solution.
Follow-up
Identification of factors likely to cause recurrence of issue, or related issues; Design, test and implementation of preventative measures to avert recurrence.
