Module Description:This module aims to familiarise students with advanced, innovative and sustainable construction, including retro-fitting. It also aims to develop a student's understanding of commercial building fit outs and specification writing.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Assess the key components in Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).
  2. Examine non-standard, sustainable and innovative construction technologies.
  3. Appraise the methods of retro-fitting buildings.
  4. Discuss the rationale for, and examine the techniques of, fitting out commercial buildings.
  5. Discuss approaches used in preparing specifications and prepare a specification for a building of conventional or advanced construction.
 

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
MMC
Modular systems including volumetric and panel systems; structural insulated panels; insulated concrete forms, hybrid systems, etc.
Sustainable construction technologies
Earth shelter; earth/clay including cob, adobe, rammed earth, CEB; straw bale etc.
Retro-fitting
Walls; roofs; floors; windows and doors; services etc.
Commercial fit outs
Rationale and approach to fit outs including modernisation, flexibility, sustainability and levels of fit out; Fit out components including walls, ceilings, floors, common areas and services.
Specifications
Need for specification based on performance evaluation; Approaches to specifications including drawings, schedule of works, separate specification document etc.; Sources of specification information; Specification writing including appropriate terminology, numbering and document cross-referencing.
