Module Description:This module should enable a student to work on his home farm or a commercial cattle farm. It should enable him evaluate and make decisions on re: feeding, breeding and management of cattle. Be able to assess and measure housing and cattle facilities. Be able to perform tasks associated with cattle production at a high level.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Describe the feeding and management of a suckler herd.
  2. Evaluate the relevance and importance of grassland in beef production.
  3. Compare the main cattle finishing systems.
  4. Assess the profitability of various beef systems.
  5. Perform tasks associated with cattle poduction and interpret ICBF breeding information.
  6. Describe disease control strategies and examine the code of practice for beef quality assurance schemes.

Indicative Content
Beef industry
Cattle populations, suckler herd size. Beef export volumes
Suckler herds
Feeding and management of a suckler herd. Calf welfare issues at dehorning, weaning and other associated tasks. Desired cow traits, nutrition and body condition scores. Targets for production and fertility. suckler herd diseases and housing. Mineral supplementation for suckler cows
Grassland management
Grassland management for beef production. Targets and performance for cattle at grass
Cattle finishing systems
Suckler calf to beef systems. Bull and heifer production systems, summer grazing systems. Nutrition and ingredients for use in cattle finishing diets
Pofitability of beef systems
Feed budgets for the main beef systems focussing on the market return and profitability at farm level
Beef skills
Suckler calf skills, associated cow skills, condition scoring, cattle facilities, ICBF data. Grass budgeting and Spring rotation planner. Cattle weights and carcase quality
Diseases and quality assurance
Main diseases of the calf and cow and associated symptoms, preventions and treatments. Code of practice for quality assurance schemes
