Module Description:This module aims to prepare students to undertake a dissertation by informing them of the importance, purpose and methods of research and presenting findings in advance of the dissertation module (stage 4). It also aims to direct students towards a topic of interest and to commence a literature review.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Evaluate the purpose of research and the research processes as a means of establishing knowledge.
  2. Explain the key components of a dissertation, including aims, objectives, hypothesis, rationale, methodology, literature review and research.
  3. Identify and select a suitable building surveying topic for research.
  4. Prepare an annotated bibliography on the chosen building surveying topic.
  5. Prepare a dissertation proposal on the chosen building surveying topic, incorporating an annotated bibliography, in a professional format.

Research processes
Purpose of research; establishing knowledge; data collection (qualitative and quantitative, literature reviews, laboratory, questionnaires and interviews, case studies, plagiarism); data analysis, manipulation and observation (statistical)
Key components of dissertation
Aims, objectives, hypothesis, rationale, methodology, literature review and research
Organisation and layout of information in a technical report
Use of headings and numberings; style for readability; presentation of graphs and tables; use of Microsoft Word
Presentations and interviews
Preparation (choice of content, choice of format, intended audience); conduct of presentation (contact with audience, voice, use of ICT); conduct of interview (response to questions)
