Module Description:This module aims to provide students with a knowledge of both general project management theory and project management theory as applied to the property and construction industry, including the processes and techniques used in the procurement of new buildings and refurbishment works.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to
  1. Explain the theories, principles and functions of project management.
  2. Discuss the roles, responsibilities and necessary qualities of a project manager.
  3. Evaluate the success criteria of a project.
  4. Evaluate the key factors for consideration by a project manager at each phase in a construction project.
  5. Prepare a pre-tender safety and health plan for a building refurbishment project.
  6. Create a programme resource schedule using project management software for a construction project.
 

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Traditional Project Management Theory
Function of project management and management generally, including the planning and control cycle; benefits of project management; processes of project management; life cycle of projects; characteristics and qualities of a good project manager.
Success Criteria
Time, cost, quality, function etc.
Project Management in Construction Projects
Role and responsibilities of a project manager at each stage of a construction project; stages to include: inception, feasibility, strategy, outline design, detailed design, tendering, construction, commissioning, handover, review and assessment. Factors for consideration at each stage include, where appropriate: client's brief/requirements including success criteria (programme, cost, quality), business case, strategy including tendering and contract, project team, design and technical requirements, environmental, legal, health & safety, risk management, value management, negotiation and dispute resolution.
Project Management Software
Types of Project Management software available in industry; application of MS Project including: identifying and linking tasks, critical path, Ghantt charts, resources, reporting etc.

Reassessment of this module will consist of a repeat examination. It is possible that there will also be a requirement to be reassessed in a coursework element.
Reassessment Description
Students will be given the opportunity to remediate part or all of their CA performance by the autumn/repeat examinations board by repeating part or all of the same or similar CA.
