Module Description: The aim of this module is to introduce students to the nature of managerial work and to the contemporary issues facing managers today. The module will provide a valuable business and managerial background for students together with a firm foundation for progression to the related level 8 programmes.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Identify the principal historical and contemporary approaches to the study of management and define the nature of managerial work.
MLO2 Discuss the composition of the Global Environment in which mangers must operate.
MLO3 Summarise the main functional areas of a business and explain how managers carry out their functions of organizing, planning, decision-making, controlling, leading and motivating.
MLO4 Describe appropriate employee approaches including effective hiring processes, ongoing training, performance management and diversity management.
MLO5 Explain the concepts of organisational culture, ethics and corporate social responsibility and the role that managers play in encouraging ethical behavior and corporate and social responsibility.

Management Concepts and Evolution
Definitions of management; skills, roles and functions of managers; Mintzberg's managerial roles; managers v leaders; classical and contemporary approaches to management.
Managing in a Global Environment
Global perspectives; doing business globally; the global environment: political, legal, economic, technological, social, cultural and environmental.
Organisation Design
Designing organisation structures; principal functional areas of a business; work specialization, departmentalisaton, chain of command; span of control; centralization and decentralization; formalisation; mechanistic and organic structures; traditional organisation design; contemporary organization design.
Plannning and Control
Nature and purpose of planning; goals and plans; setting goals and developing plans; the strategic management process; the control process; measuring of organizational performance; controlling employing performance.
Decision Making
The decision-making process; making decision: rationality; bounded rationality; the role of politics, intuition and evidence based management; types of decisions, decision-making conditions, group decision-making; groupthink.
Human Resource Management
The human resource management process; identifying, recruiting and selecting competent employees; providing employees with needed skills, knowledge and competencies, retaining competent, high-performing employees.
Foundations of Individual Behaviour
Attitudes and job performance; personality; perception; learning; managing generational differences; managing negative behaviour in the workplace.
Motivation
The nature of motivation; content and process theories of motivation; contemporary theories of motivation; current issues in motivation.
Diversity
Types of workforce diversity; challenges in managing diversity; workplace diversity initiatives.
Organisation Culture, Social Responsibility and Ethics
The concept of organization culture, the role of culture in organization, Handy's typology of culture; the link between culture, social responsibility and ethics; what it means to be socially responsible and what factors influence that decision, green management, factors that lead to ethical and unethical behaviour, management's role in encouraging ethical behaviour, current social responsibility and ethical issues.
