Module Description: This module is designed to provide students with an understanding of the national regulatory framework underpinning marketing, PR and communications.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO2 Describe the principles of contract and consumer law.
MLO3 Explain the principles of data protection and privacy law and their relevance to those operating in marketing and communications.
MLO4 Discuss the relevance of intellectual property law for marketing and communication practitioners.
MLO5 Describe the law of defamation in Ireland and its relevance to marketing and communications.
MLO6 Describe the principles of law relating to online communications.

Sources of Law
Background to the Irish legal system with emphasis on sources of law relevant to those operating in marketing and communications.
Contract and Consumer Law
Principles governing contract and consumer law.
Data Protection and Privacy
Overview of the law of privacy with particular emphasis on data protection.
Intellectual Property Law
Focus on law of trademarks and copyright and the relevance of these to marketing and communications personnel.
Defamation
Application of the Defamation Act 2009 in Ireland.
Law of Online Communications
Regulation of online communications in Ireland with reference to concept of digital citizenship.
