Module Description: This module develops learners’ proficiency in English at level B2 with a strong focus on English for Academic Purposes.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Listen to spoken discourse at level B2 and demonstrate comprehension by identifying gist and detail.
MLO2 Discuss the main themes in a text, explaining and defining key concepts in the text and topic.
MLO3 Read academic, non-academic and business texts at level B2, demonstrating comprehension by interpreting gist, detail and inference.
MLO4 Write academic texts following conventions, to include summarising a text, and creating a bibliography.
MLO5 Use grammar and lexis at level B2 with some accuracy, to include the use of zero and 1st conditional forms.

Module Indicative Content
Reading
Reading academic texts for gist, detail and inference at B2 level. Reading some non-academic/business related texts. Careful reading of text books and articles relating to other modules.
Writing
Academic Referencing and writing a bibliography/references section. Summarising an academic text. Error correction: own errors and peer errors language awareness. Classification of errors to increase/improve language awareness.
Listening
Academic Listening at B2 level, e.g., listening to lectures and talks for gist and detail. Business Listening for gist and detail.
Speaking
Discussing the main themes in a text. Providing explanations and definitions of various words/expressions in a text. Being able to discuss at length about a specific topic from a text.
Vocabulary
Academic related vocabulary – vocab related to study – talking about sources/data. Selection of Business-related vocabulary relevant to students’ courses.
Grammar
Selection of phrasal verbs relating to academic writing. Selection of Collocations in Business and Academic English. Prepositional phrases used in Academic English. Conditionals zero and 1.
Pronunciation
Pronunciation is taught in context, as problematic sounds arise, with a focus also on emphasis, and intonation.
Strategy Training/Self-directed study
Proofreading own writing. Error correction: language awareness.
