Module Description: The aim of this module is to equip the learner with knowledge and skills relating to children's health and health related issues which are necessary to care for the well-being of children.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Module Indicative Content
Unit 1. Child Health.
Principles and practices of child health. Clinical manifestations of both the well and sick child. Responding to common childhood illnesses. Temperature taking (Theory and Practical). Fever in children and red flag symptoms. Immunisations. Oral health. Toileting (Practical).
Unit 2. Nutrition.
Artificial feeding. Breast feeding. Childhood nutrition (6 months- 5 years). Childhood nutrition (5-6 years) Childhood Obesity. Healthy eating in an early childhood setting including Little Steps Initiative partnered by HSE, (Republic of Ireland) & Health Promotion Agency (Northern Ireland).
Unit 3. General Hygiene and Infection Control.
Introduction to general hygiene. Introduction to infection control. Hand Washing (Theory and Practical). Causes of illness in infants and children under 6 years.
Unit 4. Health Promotion and Risk.
Introduction to Health Promotion. Definitions. Role of the early childhood practitioner in health promotion. Developing skills in promoting health- communication, interpersonal skills and planning health promotion initiatives. Risk:- Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act. Risk assessment. Risk assessment in the Early Childhood setting.
