Module Description: |
This module aims to develop learners' language proficiency at level B2. There is a strong focus on English for Academic Purposes (EAP), with learners developing skills in note-taking in lectures, critical thinking, analysing their reading, adhering to academic conventions, and learning to discuss their coursework using academic language.

MLO1 |
Listen to lectures at level B2, and demonstrate comprehension by identifying the main points, and making notes that capture key content. |
MLO2 |
Discuss (using language at B2 level) academic topics, including a discussion of the student’s own experience of coursework. |
MLO3 |
Write texts that are relevant to the student’s needs, to include a business report and an academic essay, in adherence to writing conventions. |
MLO4 |
Read authentic academic texts and demonstrate comprehension and critical thinking by critically analysing the texts. |
MLO5 |
Use a variety of language forms relating to business and academia, to include phrasal verbs, collocations and use 2nd and 3rd conditional forms. |

You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. Module Indicative Content |
Reading
Purposeful reading and note taking. Reading for deeper analysis. SP3R in-depth reading. Critical Reading. Reading of authentic academic texts and Journal articles. Business-related articles at B2 level.

Writing
Writing an academic essay following academic layout and conventions: introduction, paragraphing, conclusion. Supporting points with referencing, following conventions of Harvard Referencing. Writing a brief review of a journal article; summarising. Analysing the article and establishing the central points, themes, OR Writing an executive Business Report following all report writing conventions. Functional language for report writing.

Listening
Academic Listening at B2 Level. Authentic Listening. Listening actively to take notes in a lecture.

Writing
Speaking about/ explaining/ outlining/ the experience and process of completing an academic essay. Being able to choose and examine the main points of a journal article and to discuss them. Discussing the key academic vocabulary in an academic text and explain it.

Grammar
Articles a/an/the and NO article rules in detail. Conditionals 2 and 3. Selection of Phrasal verbs relating to business and study/academic English. Prepositional phrases and collocations used in Business English and study/academic English. Modal verbs for obligation/should/need to/must/ought to.

Vocabulary
Academic related vocabulary. Key terms and words relating to academic writing.

Strategy training
Using self-access material to consolidate grammar points from class; to practise listening; to consolidate vocabulary from class. Some handouts will be provided for self-directed study relating to material covered in class in order to review and consolidate language.
