Module Description: This module aims to develop learners' language proficiency at level B2+ approximately. There is a particular emphasis on the language of research, in order to support students who are carrying out final-year projects, and those who intend to progress to further study.
 
Module Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

MLO1 Listen to spoken English at level B2+ and demonstrate comprehension by interpreting detail and conclusions.
MLO2 Discuss (using language at level B2+) a small-scale research project they have carried out, to include, for example, a discussion of their research aims, questions, methods, data and findings.
MLO3 Read a range of texts (at level B2+) and demonstrate comprehension by interpreting detail and conclusions, to include texts relating to research, such as participant information sheets, and research reports.
MLO4 Write (using language at level B2+) texts that are relevant to the students' immediate academic and general needs, including a report on a small-scale research project.
MLO5 Use the lexis and grammar of research, to include passive forms in the past, present, and future; question forms; reported questions; and reported speech.

Module Indicative Content
Language of research
Vocabulary for discussing research, i.e., describing research methods, discussing data and figures, expressions for reporting what others say, hedging expressions to avoid generalisations and stereotypes, expressions for reporting findings and conclusions. Grammar of research, i.e., future passives in a research proposal, direct questions, reported questions in a report, reported speech, and past passive forms.
Reading
Academic and non-academic reading at B2+ level. Reading about studies and research, e.g., newspaper reports, exemplars of student research proposals, participant information sheets, and short research papers. Comprehension exercises and language awareness tasks based on those readings.
Writing
Writing a research proposal; a set of research questions, interview questions or a survey questionnaire; a participant information sheet, and an email inviting participants to a study. Writing about ethical considerations, such as voluntary participation, right to withdraw, anonymity, confidentiality, data protection, etc. Writing a short report outlining the aim(s), methods, and findings of your study.
Listening
Academic listening at B2+ level. Understanding interviews, surveys, and discussions of research findings. Non-academic listening at B2+ level.
Speaking
Asking and answering questions in an interview or survey. Reporting orally on your study. Pronunciation in context.
