Module Learning Outcome Description |
MLO1 |
Evaluate wind speed variation with height above ground level at a given site, describe the variation of wind speed with time in both the long and short term and use the statistical methods such as Weibull distribution to calculate wind energy resource. |
MLO2 |
Appraise how wind speed and other metrological parameters are measured, present measured data in a form used by the wind energy industry and apply simple guidelines to estimate changes in wind speed due to simple topographic features and changes in surface roughness. |
MLO3 |
Assess the function of the main mechanical, structural, control and electrical components of a horizontal axis wind turbine. |
MLO4 |
Evaluate the fundamental aerodynamics of a wind turbine rotor and based on the kinetic energy in the wind, derive expressions for the relationship between power available in the wind and the maximum theoretical power that can be extracted from the wind (‘Betz limit’). |
MLO5 |
Assess the forces that act on a wind turbine and, in particular, show how lift and drag forces vary with angle of attack. |
MLO6 |
Describe the main steps involved in the planning of a wind farm including the environmental issues and the economic viability of a wind farm development. |
MLO7 |
Critically evaluate the design requirements for offshore wind farms and small wind technology. |
