The aim of this module is to develop comprehension of music theory and a basic knowledge of music notation software. The students are expected to assimilate newly acquired knowledge through practical application in keyboard performance and aural skills development.

Demonstrate a secure foundation in notation of music in treble, bass and alto clefs |
MLO2 |
Identify aurally and notate basic rhythmic patterns in both simple and compound time |
MLO3 |
Recognise chords, cadences and common harmonic progressions and apply this musical knowledge in practice |
MLO4 |
Develop a basic level of competency in the practice of sight-reading music in the treble, bass and alto clefs |
MLO5 |
Acquire a basic working knowledge of music notation software and MIDI |

Module Indicative Content |
Music Theory
Proficient reading of treble, bass and alto clefs. Recognition and notation of simple chord progressions involving root, first and second inversion chords in major and keys. Comprehension of basic transposition. Recognition of scores and notation for popular arrangements

Aural Skills
Identify major, minor (harmonic and melodic) scalic patterns
Intervals - All major and perfect intervals, and minor 3rd
Melodic Dictation
Rhythmic Dictation (Simple and Compound using semibreve, minim, crotchet, dotted crotchet, quaver, semi-quaver)
Chord Identification - Major and Minor root position, and Major root, 1st inversion, 2nd inversions

Notation Software
Basic knowledge of music notation software and MIDI, application of music theory in software
|
Keyboard Skills
Scales and Arpeggios: C, G, D, A Major, F major, B flat major, E flat major, A minor, E minor, D minor (harmonic and melodic)
Chord Identification
Sight Reading (Treble, Bass and Alto clefs)
Transposition
Performance piece of suitable difficulty
