Module summary
This module comprises a survey course which aims to introduce students to the historical development of Ireland spanning both the Early Medieval and High Medieval periods. This era marks Ireland’s increasing contact with various European cultural and political influences. The course begins with an examination of these cultural contacts and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. The importance of invasion and trade to the development of Ireland will be explored with reference to the Vikings and the Normans. The latter half of the course will examine the development of the modern centralised political kingship. The main objective here is to examine all these developments in the Irish context in conjunction with Early, High and Late Medieval Europe.
