Module Summary
Great Britain emerged from the Second World War as victor and united by a narrative of British nationhood surviving and triumphant. Britishness was monarchy, church, parliament and people. Today that concept of Great Britain is being submerged under a new identity of British multi-culturalism, ethnicity, secularism and new religions. This module explores the process of change and reconfiguration that Great Britain has followed in the fifty-five years of momentous social, economic and cultural change since 1945 and the changes in monarchy, parliament and people.
Lectures may include:
• From warfare state to welfare state. • Macmillan and the politics of nostalgia. • Suez crisis. • The decline of empire. • Swinging ‘60s: football and pop. • Immigration. • Europe. • The decline of Protestantism • the discontents of economic decline. • Thatcherism • New Labour. • Devolution and a fragile State • The crisis of the monarchy. • America. • Millenium Britain: Monarchy, Parliament, People.
