Introduction to Heritage and Heritage Management
Definitions of heritage. The differences between heritage and history. The need for management of the resource. Related areas.
Who is heritage for?
Commodification of heritage. Relationship to political ideologies. A history of the development of the concept of heritage. Theories of heritage.
Fields of heritage
Nature, Landscape, Monuments, Artefacts, Activities, People, Sites. The people involved in heritage and their roles: owners, insiders, visitors, governments, academics.
History of the Cultural Sector
The concepts of culture, heritage and taste • The History of the Museum • Classifying objects and display • State, War and Culture in the 20th century • Cultural Policy and the Irish Revolution
Selling heritage
Groups involved in 'purchasing' or investing in heritage. The benefits of heritage.
Heritage as identity
The powerful role heritage plays in strengthening identities at various levels. Role in creation of unique 'senses of place'. Home, neighbourhood, district, county, region, nation. Common and shared identities. Europe and the World.
