The aim of this module is to provide the student with an introduction to Human Resource Management, its approaches, practices and policies in organisations today together with a knowledge of the Irish Industrial Relations system.

Discuss the nature of human resource management and the employment relationship. |

Describe and apply best practice in relation to a range of human resource practices including HR Planning, Recruitment, Selection and Performance Management. |

Evaluate the nature of learning, training and development in organisations. |
MLO4 |
Explain how to create an employment contract with reference to the relevant employment legislation. |
MLO5 |
Examine the issues in relation to the handling of grievances, disciplinary and health and safety matters. |

The Nature of Human Resource Management and Employee Relations
The historical development of HRM; HR activities; the specialist HR function; employee relationship; contract of service, the psychological contract, grievance procedures, disciplinary procedures, health, safety and well-being of employees.

Industrial Relations
The Irish industrial relations system; the nature and structure of trade unions and employer associations; legislation in relation to the formation of trade unions and their activities; the nature of collective bargaining,; the services provided by the Workplace Relations Commission and the Labour Court.

Introduction to Employment Law
The nature of the employment contract; legislation relating to the contents of the Employment Contract; the Organisation of Working Time Act; Minimum pay and Equality legislation; statutory leave.

Human Resource Planning and Recruitment
The human resource planning process; analysing the existing supply of labour; forecasting the demand for labour; forecasting the supply of labour; the labour market; the flexible firm; job analysis; the recruitment phase.

Selection of Employees
Screening and shortlisting; suitability, validity and reliability of selection methods; main techniques of candidate assessment; the efficiency of the selection interview; errors and biases in selection; types of interview questions; Testing; placement, induction and follow-up.

Managing and Appraising Performance
The nature and process of performance management; peformance appraisal; methods of performance appraisal; the appraisal interview; common errors in the appraisal process; the ethics of appraisal.

Human Resource Development
The process of learning, training and development in organisations; learning, training and development methods; evaluation of learning; career development and management.

Reward Management
The scope of reward management; the requirements of an effective reward system; determining the relative value of jobs; approaches to Job evaluation; payment systems; fringe benefits; pay as a motivator.
